Getting to Coba is only a 90 minute drive past Tulum, just south of Playa del Carmen. Here you can get a special insight into the ancient Mayan world. Visit the ancient ruins, and for the brave, take a climb up to the top of the Grand Pyramid.
Stay Overnight in Coba and Beat the Crowds
If you would appreciate a less crowded and more leisurely tour of Mayan ruins, Coba should be high on your list. Plan to spend the night, possibly at the Sac Be hotel in the village, which is better than it looks from the outside. Rooms are clean and fully equipped with showers, air con, etc. Nice upstairs verandah for breakfast. The ruins are close by and very impressive, large and not as decayed as others. They are spread out through the deep jungle with easy walking trails. The big attraction is the Grand Pyramid which alone of all the region sites allows visitors to climb to the top. It is a very steep climb and not for the faint-hearted but the view over miles of jungle is worth the effort. The furtherest point out is about 2 kilometers, so many people rent one of the bicycles available, or ride back on a pedi-cab tricycle. Cost about 75 pesos, and worth it.
After the pyramid, don’t miss a swim in one of the three cenotes a bit further up the road, particularly the MultunHul cave cenote. Change rooms and showers available, then climb down a circular staircase into the huge domed cave with perfectly clear water, warmer than you would expect.
Coba is a Special Experience
After the crowds and commercialism at Tulum and Chichen Itsa, Coba is a refreshing change. As always, try to arrive early and you will have a memorable, personal experience.
